Reading the Space Before Drawing Anything

Before a single cabinet drawing is made, a competent designer measures four things on site: available wall length, the position of existing plumbing and drainage points, the electrical load available for appliances, and the natural light and ventilation openings. Moving a sink or a gas point after the plan is finalised is one of the more expensive corrections in a kitchen renovation, because it usually means breaking tiled flooring or rerouting concealed piping that was never meant to move.

This is also where dependencies between trades surface early. Civil work, electrical points, and false ceiling levels for chimney ducting all have to be resolved before cabinet production starts, not after. On projects where this sequence is skipped, the most common casualty is the chimney duct, it gets planned around an existing beam only after the false ceiling is already closed, and the fix costs far more than the five minutes it would have taken to check during the design stage.

Kitchen Layouts and the Work Triangle

The work triangle is the imaginary path connecting the three points a cook moves between most often, the stove, the sink, and the refrigerator. It exists because these three points account for most of the physical movement in a kitchen, and a poorly sized triangle shows up immediately in daily use, either as excess walking or as constant collisions between people cooking together. According to the National Kitchen & Bath Association's planning guidelines, the combined length of the three legs of the triangle should not exceed 26 feet, and no single leg should measure less than 4 feet or more than 9 feet. Triangles shorter than this feel cramped, with the cook constantly turning in place; triangles longer than this waste steps on every single meal.

The work triangle is a planning tool, not a rulebook. It depends directly on the layout chosen for the room, and the layout in turn depends on the shape and size of the available space, the number of people who cook, and whether the kitchen is open to a living or dining area. Below are the five layouts we use most often, with the space and household profile each one suits.

Straight or single wall layout

This is the layout you get when the kitchen is really just a section of a larger room, common in studio apartments or small 1BHK homes where the kitchen opens into the living area rather than sitting in its own enclosed room. All cabinetry, the sink, the hob and the fridge sit along one wall, which keeps plumbing and electrical runs simple since everything terminates on a single wall instead of being split across two or three. 

The catch is that the work triangle gets stretched into almost a straight line rather than a triangle, so if the wall is long, the cook ends up walking the full length of the counter for every task. Keeping the wall length under 10 feet is what keeps this layout efficient. Beyond that, a parallel or L-shaped layout usually serves the same footprint better.

Parallel or galley layout

Two counters face each other across a walkway, with the sink and hob typically split between the two runs. This is the layout that gives the tightest, most efficient work triangle of any option, because the cook can turn and reach both counters without walking more than a step or two. It suits narrow, rectangular kitchens well, the kind found in older apartment layouts across Indian cities where the kitchen is a corridor-shaped room off the dining area. 

The tradeoff is that the aisle between the two counters becomes a hard constraint. Anything under 42 inches makes it uncomfortable for one person to work, and if two people cook together, that number needs to move closer to 48 inches. This layout also does not allow for an island, and it works only when plumbing can be routed to a single wall since running a fresh water and drainage line to the opposite counter usually is not worth the cost.

L-shaped layout

Two adjoining walls form an unbroken counter run around a corner, which is why this has become the default choice for most 2BHK and 3BHK homes in India where the kitchen is roughly square. The advantage over a straight layout is real workflow gain: the corner lets you place the sink, hob and prep zone on separate legs of the L without any of them competing for the same stretch of counter. 

The one detail that gets missed constantly is what happens at the actual corner left as a plain shelf, that corner becomes storage nobody reaches without pulling out everything in front of it. A lazy susan carousel or a magic corner pull-out solves this, but it has to be specified at the design stage, not added later, since the cabinet carcass needs to be built to accommodate the mechanism. When the L opens into a dining or living space rather than closing off into its own room, it also gives you a natural spot for a breakfast counter along the open edge.

U-shaped layout

Three walls of cabinetry give this layout the most counter and storage of any configuration that does not involve an island, which makes it the layout of choice for households that cook seriously, bake often, or simply need more landing space than a two-wall kitchen can offer. It also creates two corners instead of one, so the corner storage question that comes up once in an L-shaped kitchen comes up twice here, and both need a real solution rather than a fixed shelf. 

The width of the room matters more here than in any other layout. Below 8 feet between the two parallel arms, the space starts to feel boxed in and the person standing at the center wall ends up cramped between the two side counters. This layout works best when the open end of the U faces into an adjoining room rather than a wall, since that keeps the kitchen from feeling like a closed box even though it is enclosed on three sides.

Island layout

An island adds a freestanding counter, and sometimes a secondary sink or hob, in the open floor space beyond an L or U-shaped base. This only works where the room, or the open-plan area the kitchen sits within, has enough floor space to keep at least 42 to 48 inches of clear walkway around the island on every side, otherwise it becomes an obstacle rather than an asset. The real cost driver that the basic layout comparison misses is what it takes to service the island. 

If the island carries a sink or hob, fresh water, drainage and gas lines all need to be routed under the floor to a point that previously had none of them, which usually means breaking flooring that would otherwise stay untouched. Where the island is used only for prep and seating, without plumbing, that cost drops significantly and the main expense becomes the extra cabinetry and countertop slab. Islands double as a social and dining zone as much as a work zone, which is why they show up almost exclusively in open-plan homes where the kitchen is meant to be part of the living space rather than separate from it.

Storage Planning That Actually Works

Storage in a kitchen is not one category, it is at least four, dry grocery storage, cookware storage, crockery and daily use storage  and appliance storage. Treating all of it as generic cabinet space is the single most common planning error we see, and it is the reason so many finished kitchens still feel short on room even when the cabinet count looks generous on paper.

Corners are the clearest example of dependency between layout and storage. An L-shaped or U-shaped kitchen automatically creates one or two blind corners, and what goes into that corner, a lazy susan carousel, a magic corner pull-out, or simply a fixed shelf, determines whether that volume gets used at all or quietly becomes dead storage within a year. 

Full-extension drawers on soft-close channels solve a related problem, shelves force you to unload everything in front to reach what is at the back, while a drawer brings the entire contents forward in one pull. In a recent Coimbatore apartment kitchen of about 110 square feet, switching two base units from shelves to drawers gave the client working access to spice tins and pans that had been sitting untouched at the back of the cabinet for years.

Tall units deserve the same scrutiny. A full-height pantry unit with pull-out baskets holds significantly more than an equivalent width of base cabinets, and it keeps grocery storage at eye level instead of at floor level. The trade-off is that a tall unit needs to be positioned so it does not become the full-height obstacle that separates two primary work centres, which is exactly the kind of clash the layout and storage plan need to resolve together, not one after the other.

Materials: What Goes Into the Carcass and the Shutter

A kitchen cabinet is built from two separate material decisions that get confused constantly, the carcass, which is the internal box that carries load and takes daily moisture exposure, and the shutter, which is the visible door or drawer front. Getting the carcass right matters more for long-term performance, because it is the part that fails first when moisture is involved, and by the time it fails, the shutter finish is irrelevant.

Shutter finishes are a separate conversation about appearance and maintenance rather than structural performance. Laminate is the most common choice because it resists scratches well and costs the least. PU (polyurethane) finishes give a smoother, more uniform matte or gloss look but scratch more visibly and need more careful cleaning. Acrylic delivers the highest gloss and the most vivid colour but shows fingerprints and water spots faster than either of the other two, which matters more in a kitchen than in any other room of the house.

India also has a regulatory layer to this decision that most kitchen guides skip entirely. Storage furniture, including kitchen cabinets, now falls under the Bureau of Indian Standards specification IS 17634:2022, made mandatory under the Furniture quality control order from February 2026. The standard sets requirements for load-bearing capacity, joint strength, and stability testing, essentially the structural side of a cabinet rather than its finish. Countertops and Backsplash

Granite remains the most widely used countertop material in Indian kitchens because it tolerates heat directly from hot vessels and costs less than engineered alternatives, though it needs periodic sealing to resist staining from oil and turmeric. Quartz, an engineered stone, is non-porous and needs no sealing at all, which makes it easier to maintain, but it can discolour if a hot pan is placed on it directly. 

Quartzite sits between the two, a natural stone with quartz-like density and better heat tolerance than engineered quartz, at a price point that usually lands above granite. The backsplash behind the counter should be chosen for the same heat and stain resistance as the counter itself, glass and ceramic tile both work well, since this is the surface closest to the hob and the one most exposed to daily splatter.

Hardware and Fittings That Determine Lifespan

Hardware is the part of a kitchen that gets used the most and noticed the least, until it fails. Hinges are typically rated for a cycle count, the number of open-close movements they can handle before performance drops, and a kitchen cabinet used daily by a family will cross tens of thousands of cycles within a few years. 

Soft-close channels on drawers reduce wear on both the drawer and the carcass by controlling the final motion instead of letting it slam shut. Gas struts on overhead or lift-up cabinets need to be rated for the actual weight of the shutter and its contents, undersized struts are one of the more common hardware complaints we see, and they are also one of the easiest to prevent at the design stage by matching strut capacity to shutter size before ordering.

Lighting, Ventilation and Ergonomics

Ergonomics in a kitchen is about matching fixed dimensions to the person using the space most often. Counter height is typically set between 34 and 36 inches for an average adult user, and this should be confirmed against the primary cook's height rather than assumed. Aisle width matters just as much, the NKBA's planning guidelines recommend at least 42 inches of clearance between counters for a single cook and 48 inches where two people work at once, and the same guidelines call for window or skylight area equal to at least 8 percent of the kitchen's floor area for adequate daylight and natural ventilation.

Task lighting is a separate layer from ambient lighting, and skipping it is one of the most common oversights in otherwise well-designed kitchens. A ceiling light alone throws the cook's own shadow across the counter at exactly the point where a knife is being used. Under cabinet LED strips solve this directly by lighting the counter surface from above the work zone rather than from across the room. Ventilation follows a similar logic: chimney or exhaust capacity should be sized to the hob's output and the kitchen's volume, not picked by brand preference, since an undersized unit will leave grease and odour in the room regardless of how good the filter is.
