A modular kitchen in Coimbatore typically costs between ₹1,200 and ₹3,000 per sq ft, and the kitchen of a standard 2BHK apartment usually lands between ₹1.5 lakh and ₹3 lakh. Both figures hold true, and both explain why two quotations for the same kitchen can differ by ₹1 lakh. The rate per sq ft. is only a starting point. The final price is decided by what sits inside the cabinet, how the materials handle steam and water over ten years, and what the quotation leaves out.
This guide follows the price in the order it builds up on a real project, so you can read any quotation in Coimbatore and know exactly what you are paying for.
Market quotes across Coimbatore commonly fall between ₹1,200 and ₹3,000 per sq ft. If the billed cabinet area is 100 sq ft and the rate is ₹2,000, cabinetry alone comes to about ₹2 lakh, before the items covered later in this article. The table shows where typical specifications sit inside that band.
Designers usually apply the rate to the cabinet area, not to the floor area of the room. A 10 by 10 ft kitchen with cabinets on two walls is billed on those two runs, not on 100 sq ft. Some firms quote per running foot of base and wall units, and others per sq ft of shutter face, so ask which basis is used before comparing two offers.
Also ask whether the rate bundles carcass, shutters, hardware and installation. A low rate often excludes hardware or countertop, which then appear as separate lines and close the gap with the higher quote.
The layout decides how many linear feet of cabinet you need, and cabinet length is what the rate multiplies. A straight kitchen along one wall uses the least material. A parallel kitchen doubles the runs. An island adds cost mostly through plumbing or electrical relocation, not through the cabinet itself. Corners add hardware, since a blind corner needs a pull-out or carousel unit to be usable.
For most Coimbatore apartments with a kitchen between 8 by 10 ft and 10 by 12 ft, an L-shaped kitchen layout gives two working walls and one efficient corner without inflating the cabinet run.
Most add-on costs come from correcting a poor plan after the first design review. The National Kitchen & Bath Association planning guidelines recommend that the three legs between cooktop, sink and refrigerator total no more than 26 ft, with each leg between 4 and 9 ft. They also recommend 158 inches of countertop frontage, 24 inches deep, to cover landing, preparation and storage.
A layout that respects these figures avoids the extra unit clients request later because the cooktop has no landing space. Vastu preferences for the cooktop position are common in Coimbatore homes, and they should be settled at this stage, since moving a gas point or a chimney duct later costs more than any cabinet change.
The sink unit, corner hardware, installation labour and the chimney cut-out cost the same in a 60 sq ft kitchen as in a 120 sq ft one. That is why the per sq ft rate rises as the area shrinks. In compact kitchens, spend goes further on internal organisers than on extra cabinet length, and our note on tiny kitchen interior design ideas shows how to plan for that.
The carcass is the box of each cabinet, sides, base, top and back. Shutters are what you see, but the carcass decides whether the kitchen survives years of steam, spills and a leaking RO line. It also carries the hardware, since hinges and channels hold only as well as the board around the screw.
Plywood grades in India are governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. IS 303 covers MR (moisture resistant) and BWR (boiling water resistant) grades. IS 710 covers marine-grade BWP (boiling waterproof). Since a 2024 amendment, IS 303 also lists a BWP grade for interiors, so a sheet stamped "IS 303 BWP" is not the same product as IS 710 marine ply.
In practice, use IS 710 BWP for the sink base and the RO or dishwasher zone, and IS 303 BWR for wall units, drawers and tall units. Marine ply throughout adds cost in dry zones without adding protection there. Check the ISI mark and grade stamp on the sheet edge, and treat BWP priced like MR as a warning sign. Even the right grade fails if the edges near the sink are left unsealed.
Laminate is the lowest cost and copes well with daily use. Membrane (vinyl-wrapped) allows routed profiles at moderate cost but can lift near the hob. Acrylic gives a glossy surface that shows fingerprints and fine scratches. PU paint and veneer sit at the top of the range.
Regular tempering and frying in South Indian cooking leaves an oil film on shutters, so cleaning effort should guide the choice more than the showroom sample. Matte finishes hide it better than gloss. Current kitchen design trends favour fluted and textured surfaces, but a trend finish only makes sense if you accept its upkeep.
A kitchen carries dozens of hinges and drawer channels, and their quality shows in years two to four, when drawers sag or doors drift. Soft-close hinges, full-extension channels and branded baskets from makers such as Hettich, Hafele or Blum cost more per piece but rarely need replacement. Accessories such as tall pull-outs, cutlery trays and oil-bottle units should be specified by how you cook, not added by default, because each one is a separate line item.
Countertops are frequently outside the per sq ft rate. Granite is the common budget choice and resists heat well. Quartz resists stains better and costs more, though it needs trivets under hot vessels. Solid surface and stainless steel suit specific needs and price differently again. The backsplash tiling is usually a civil work item and not part of the cabinet quote. For finish pairings that work with each countertop, browse our kitchen interior design ideas.
Appliances are almost never included in the modular rate, but they change the cabinet cost. A built-in oven or microwave needs a custom tall unit with the correct ventilation gap. A chimney needs a duct route, and in apartments the outlet may need approval from the residents' association. Share the appliance models with your designer before the drawings are finalised, as cut-out sizes vary by brand.
Cabinets are cut to site measurements, so measure only after plastering and flooring are complete. Measuring earlier leads to gaps at the wall and floor that show for years. Shifting plumbing, adding electrical points, redoing wall tiles or lowering a false ceiling all sit outside the cabinet cost. Independent houses are usually simpler to work in, while apartments add lift booking and society working hours, which affect installation time.
Before signing, ask for an itemised list and confirm each of the following in writing:
Whether GST is included. Turnkey interior contracts commonly attract 18% GST, but the rate depends on how the contract is structured, so get the figure stated.
The plywood grade with its IS code, and the brand and model of hinges and channels.
Countertop, backsplash, chimney and appliance cut-outs, and whether they are inside or outside the rate.
Transport, installation, electrical and plumbing changes, and debris removal.
The warranty terms for carcass, hardware and finish, listed separately.
Spend on the parts that are expensive to replace, carcass in wet zones, hardware and countertop. Save on the parts that are cheap to change later, decorative glass shutters, unused tall units and lofts you will not reach. As an example, a ₹2.5 lakh kitchen with BWR carcass, a BWP sink base, branded hardware and laminate shutters will outlast a ₹2.5 lakh kitchen with acrylic shutters over MR board, even though the second looks better on handover day.
As one of the leading interior designers in Coimbatore, R Space starts with a site measurement after civil work, not with a catalogue rate. For homeowners looking for modular kitchen designers in Coimbatore, this approach helps ensure that the layout, materials, hardware and overall specification are planned around the actual kitchen space. The quotation is itemised by carcass grade with its IS code, shutter finish, hardware brand and model, countertop, appliance cut-outs, electrical and plumbing changes, installation and GST. You can see what changing a finish does to the total, and where a cheaper option carries a real risk, such as MR board near the sink or unbranded channels on heavy drawers, we say so and explain why.
Modular kitchens in Coimbatore commonly cost ₹1,200 to ₹3,000 per sq ft. The position within this range depends on plywood grade, shutter finish, hardware brand and whether the countertop and appliances are included.
A 2BHK kitchen usually costs ₹1.5 lakh to ₹3 lakh. A compact straight kitchen with laminate shutters sits near the lower end, and an L-shaped kitchen with acrylic shutters and branded hardware sits near or more than the upper end.
Quotes differ because of unstated specifications. Plywood grade, hardware brand, shutter finish, billing basis and exclusions such as countertop, GST and installation all change the total. Compare itemised quotes, not the headline rate.
Marine plywood (IS 710 BWP) is worth using in the sink base and other wet zones. For wall units, drawers and tall units, IS 303 BWR plywood is generally sufficient and keeps the budget under control.
Choose a simple layout, keep the carcass strong in wet zones, select laminate or matte finishes, and skip lofts and glass shutters you will not use. Do not cut on hardware, since it fails first.
